On-Site Grit Blasting

Grit blasting, also known as abrasive blasting, is used to remove old coatings or metal corrosion and to prepare brickwork for further coating. It involves blasting a surface with small, hard, angular-shaped pieces of metal using a jet, which lightly roughens the area and prepares the surface for fresh new coatings.

With a much lower moisture content than jet washing or sandblasting, grit blasting reduces the risk of clumps forming when the new spray coating is applied. It creates a specific textured surface that allows new coatings to bond more effectively, improving their lifespan and preventing early peeling or blistering. It also gives a consistent, clean surface that’s impossible to achieve with chemical cleaners or hand tools.

Our Process

Good preparation is vital to any successful spray application. Our qualified grit blasting team will assess your building and consider the level of blast cleaning required and the best grit type for the project. We follow the Swedish Standard Institution’s levels of SA 1-3 for grit blasting:

SA:1

Light blast cleaning, where a jet passes quickly over the surface to remove loose rust and other particles.

SA:2

Thorough blast cleaning where the jet passes over the surface long enough to remove most rust and particles.

SA:2.5

Very thorough blast cleaning where all rust and particles are removed, taking the surface back to clean, bright metal with a slight profile.

SA:3

Grit blasting to white metal, where the jet removes all particles to the point that a metal surface has only a faint metallic appearance.

Grit blasting is a surface preparation process which is generally used to remove corrosion and failing existing coating on metal substrates. An example of this would be heavy corrosion on a metal factory silo which needs preparation and coating to give a long-lasting system. The best form of surface preparation for this would be grit blasting. This works by firing varying types of fine grit (blasting media) to the surface to remove corrosion, failing coatings etc back to clean, bright metal with a slight profile. This is generally knows as SA2.5 surface preparation and is the ideal preparation of steel, prior to applying a new, high performance coating solution.

Generally, SA 2.5 is the ideal surface preparation for steel. Once we’ve completed the initial blasting preparation work, we’ll carry out a full coating service to protect your structure and keep it looking great for years to come.
