Muntons are the leading name in supplying malt and malted ingredients to the food and drink industry. In this, their 100th year of operation, we were contracted to provide a much needed repair and facelift to their pitched asbestos roof. Any work involving asbestos, requires the utmost level of safety management and preparation, something we pride ourselves on as industrial spraying contractors.
The existing roof is pitched on either side, and owing to some low capacity guttering, has suffered water ingress from the roof into the laboratory below.
The asbestos roof surface had to be cleaned in line with HSE guidelines. We used pressure washers to ensure that all lichen, dirt and other contamination was completely removed, ensuring that all gutters and downpipes were re-directed, enabling waste water to be collected in asbestos filter containers.
We also inspected all the roof panels for damage. Any cracked sheets were over-sheeted with new GRP roof sheets and primed for coating. Where whole panel replacement wasn’t necessary, we treated small areas of damage with a special asbestos roof coating, containing fibreglass mesh.
Once preparation was complete, we applied HD Sharman Delcote asbestos roof coating in line with bespoke specification provided by HD Sharman. We used the technique of airless spray application to ensure uniformity throughout.
In addition to our repair and coatings work, we had identified that existing access to the roof was difficult, so we proposed and carried out the installation of a ‘man- safe’ line in the form of a 50-metre fall restraint wall system to the gable wall adjacent to the roof and gutter.
